City Never Sleeps is a Major Update. It rebuilt the look of the whole map, replaced neutral camps with Haunts, added two new soul hotspots and reworked the HUD, the shop and the ping system. Launch day pushed Deadlock past its old concurrent player record on Steam: press citing SteamDB reported a peak of more than 228,000 players, up from about 171,000 in September 2024.

A new look for every lane
Each lane is now split into three themed areas. York, the yellow lane, runs through the Stock Exchange, the Old Fairfax Factories and the Seaport Dock. Broadway, the blue lane, goes from Uptown through Times Square to Downtown. Greenwich, the green lane, passes Umbria University, Central Park and the Brownstones. Four districts sit between the lanes: the Theater, Chinatown, the Haunted Lot and the Plaza.
Times Square on the blue Broadway lane, one of nine new lane areas.
The names are worth learning because they make calls faster: "Times Square" is quicker than "blue lane, middle". Our new map guide goes through every hotspot and hidden mechanic in detail.
Haunts replace the neutral camps
Neutral camps are gone. In their place are Haunts in tiers I to III, from families such as Specimen, Past Dues, Gutter Ghoul, Barrel Mimic, Stage Hand, Festival Spirit, Crabbage Pot, Slum Shroom and Underhand. Some fight back in new ways: Past Dues II can put you to sleep, and Slum Shroom spores slow you and cut your healing in half.
The HUD now shows each Haunt's soul value and difficulty, and respawn timers for camps and the Midboss appear in the world, with a Midboss timer on the top bar. Farming routes are easier to plan, and harder to hide. Every family and tier is in our Haunts guide.
Bell Tower and Sunken Plaza
The Bell Tower stands in Chinatown and is reached by rope. At the top are three Sinner's Sacrifices and a set of breakables, which makes it one of the richest soul spots on the map. The catch: taking souls there rings a bell the whole map can hear, and since the September 30 follow-up the ring also shows up as a minimap ping.
The Sunken Plaza is the opposite kind of risk. Fog blocks both sight and sound, and your stamina drains and does not regenerate while you are inside. The rewards are good, but walking in low on stamina is how you lose a fight you cannot escape.
The Sunken Plaza: fog that hides sight and sound, and drains your stamina.
Where both hotspots sit, and how they fit into the new lanes and districts, is in our new map guide.
The Broker came and went
The Broker was the update's late-game twist. He turned high-tier items into Corrupted versions with stronger stats, with his first stock arriving around the 30-minute mark and fresh stock about every 15 minutes after that. Each match rolled a random set of downsides that applied to every player.
The Broker's pop-up shop. It opened around the 30-minute mark.
He did not last. The Broker was removed from Standard and Ranked on October 2, and Corrupted items left Street Brawl on October 4. Neither removal came with patch notes; both were spotted by players tracking game files. A return later on is possible, but nothing is confirmed. The full story, with the strongest Corrupted items, is in our Broker guide.
Six new heroes, two a week
The six new heroes, released two a week in the order players vote for.
The update brings Rat King, Nurse Harrow, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba and Violet. Players vote on the release order in the new pregame lobby, and two heroes arrive each week, on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm Pacific. Rat King won the first vote and went live on October 2. The full schedule and what we know about each hero are in our City Never Sleeps heroes guide, and Rat King has a guide of his own.
Shop, HUD and quality of life
The shop now has Popular Items, built from live data, showing how often each item is bought and at what stage of a match.
Stat filters in the shop, plus the kill feed and chat stay visible while you buy. Number keys 1 to 6 switch shop tabs.
New ping wheels and item pings.
Ability and item inputs now fire instantly.
Sandbox tools: bot recording, a combat log, a DPS meter, falloff guides and a free shopping mode.
Shareable settings and reticle codes, settings per hero, and options for auto move, auto mantle and auto fire.
September 30 follow-up: hide player names or show hero names instead, enemy damage and enemy zipline colors, and a rebindable Down Dash.
The new Popular Items tab shows what players buy in each phase of a match.
The best of the new options are collected in our settings guide, and the testing tools in our sandbox guide.
What it means for ranked players
The ranked rules did not change. You still need 60 Standard wins and three heroes with 15 wins each to queue, calibration is still eight solo matches capped at Oracle VI, and duo partners still have to be within one full rank. What changed is everything around those rules: new routes, new Haunt timings and no more Broker mean old habits need a refresh.
Timing matters too. Valve has pushed the end of Ranked Beta Season 1 back to November 5, so players get about five weeks on the new map before they calibrate for the next season. Our season reset guide covers what happens to your rank.
What Valve says comes next
Deadlock stays invite-only. Valve says progression and hero and hideout customization are in development, that the Midboss, Guardians and Walkers get attention next, and that hero remodels come later. Bigger item redesigns and alternate game modes are described as speculative, so do not plan around them yet.
